The Quilt Speaks
Marie Birky

Under the direction of Kyle Hubbard, Glacier Gateway Music Teacher and Mary Ellen Getts, First Grade Teacher, first and fourth grades performed The Quilt Speaks.

The Quilt Speaks is a program designed to help students learn about the Underground Railroad that operated before and during the Civil War to help slaves here in America escape to freedom in the North.  Quilt patterns and special songs were used to help guide the slaves on the pathway to freedom and safety.  The quilt designs, the songs, and the children who sing them work together to weave a story that touches the heart and helps us to remember an important part of our history.

Hooked on Fishing

The Hooked on Fishing Program, sponsored by Fish, Wildlife and Parks, has engaged classrooms throughout Montana for many years. The program equips students with essential skills, promotes safety, helps students develop an appreciation for the aquatic ecosystem, and fosters a lifelong enjoyment of the sport of fishing.

Columbia Falls SD#6 fourth graders have participated in this program for many years. The photos below are of Glacier Gateway fourth graders enjoying their Hooked on Fishing field trip in late February at Murphy Lake.
